Bredevoort is a picturesque little town located in the eastern part of the Netherlands better known as the Achterhoek.
Bredevoort appears for the first time in the list of possessions of the Archbishop of Cologne in 1188. According to this list, the Archbishop owned three shares of Bredevoort castle. Apart from the extended castle, the Manor of Bredevoort also consisted of the villages of Aalten, Dinxperlo en Winterswijk with their hamlets.
Bredevoort has a strong bond with the Dutch royal family. One of the titles of our king Willem Alexander is “Heer van Bredevoort (Lord of Bredevoort).
The six pillars that Bredevoort is known for are history, art & culture, crafts, books, hospitality and natural enviroment.
Characteristic are the little medieval streets and houses, small restaurants with beautiful terraces and various (honesty) book stores.
Artists and craftsmen also feel at home in Bredevoort and the Koppelkerk (a former church building) is known as a meeting place for art and cultural activities.
We hope to welcome you soon in Bredevoort and are convinced that you will return more often!
